Clayton Leigh Scott in Seattle 1929

By 1929, Clayton “Scotty” Scott was committed to flying. Humble and confident, Scotty stands with one of Bremerton Air Ferry’s Keystone-Loening Air Yachts in Seattle at the foot of Madison Street. In this aircraft he established the Gulf of Alaska commercial air route by connecting Juneau with Cordova, the last air transport link between South America and the Arctic.

CLS at Nairobi in 1959

In 1959 Scotty admired a guidepost at the Nairobi, Kenya airport after flight testing a Boeing 707 airliner. It enticed observers to ponder distant travel destinations by referencing points linking the world of flight. Scotty kept the photo of the iconic moment. Inspired by these images, ideas developed into the Clayton Scott Monument titled PATHFINDER.

PATHFINDER

From bicycle wheels and canvas to unmanned flight vehicles and interplanetary exploration, aviation history is a compilation of the deeds of dedicated inventors, engineers, mechanics, pilots, and supporting communities.

Today the collective advancements of these pioneers comprise a body of knowledge which has enabled our dreams of adventure in air and space.

Among them, Clayton Scott gave testament to the indefatigable pragmatic spirits of aviation pioneers.  Scotty’s contributions span the globe and the era in which aviation developed into science.

Recognition of the enduring achievements of Clayton Leigh Scott was made possible by the Museum of Flight and generous donations by friends and followers in community and in aviation.
